The Miserable Day That Will Not End

Mom got a call from the vet today at 12:15 pm. She said she was going over my blood work (?) and that my Liver levels were elevated. Quite a bit in fact. She says she doesn't think it is from the chocolate. She seemed very concerned about how I was feeling. Mom told her I was a bit cuddly, but otherwise fine. The vet was surprised that I was not barfing or having diarrhea. She was surprised that I've eaten and still seem to be okay. She wants mom to bring me in first thing Monday for an ultrasound. She wants to check the size of my liver, and maybe do a biopsy.

Memere says that mom should talk to the main vet, Dr. L, first. Memere says if I am not barfing and having yucky poops then I am fine and I don't need to go in immediately. Mom doesn't know what to do. Mom is not sure what elevated Liver levels are, do, control or whatever. Does anyone know anything about this? If you do, can you tell mom, so maybe she will know what to do?

Thanks. Roxy

Hi,
We have a special place in our hearts for little black puggy's (fawns too!). We had a blind baby for a year that we lost to PDE. We now have Charlie, a lovely little girl. We will be keeping you in our thoughts and prayers while you sort out your troubles. Please rest and get better, Roxy!
Love from Charlie the puggy and Honey her corgi-pom sister in spanaway, WA

Err on the side of caution. Have her seen by the vet.

Oh Roxy, I'm sorry to hear your liver levels are elevated. Having your liver out-of-whack is not a good thing, so I think your mom should bring you in to the vet. I am purring and praying for you.

Roxy, I am sorry you are having some worrying test results. But I agree that it is better to be safe than sorry, so best to have it checked out. I hope all is well! I will purr for you.

I'd say talk to da vet, better safe than sorry. Ultrasounds aren't that bad, MomBean's had 'em before and the only thing she ever complains about is having to wait to go pee afterwards.

Geez, you are right Roxy, it never seems to end. Glad you are feeling better though, even though though your liver enzymes are elevated.

Mommy is not a vet -- she is a people doctor -- so she is unsure what the elevated liver enzymes mean to dogs. But she says in people, evelated liver enzymes could mean anything from simple vomiting ALOT to catching a virus to something really bad. So she thinks your Mom shouldn't worry, but should at the very least have Roxy's labs repeated.

Hope this helps!

We're sorry your mom is in such a dilemma. If she's like many of these humans, she's probably short some green paper the vet requires. But we know she loves you and will take you in for the test so the vet can find out what is going on with you before it gets any worse.

Oh boy, Roxy, you had a rough week, didn't you. (I guess your momma had one, too.) I hope it turns out your liver will be okay. Maybe you just need a special kind of stinky goodness! My sister Coco sends tail-waggies.

Liver enzymes show us how well the liver is functioning at the time the blood work was taken. Lots of things can throw off the enzymes too--like the people doc said. In fact, most human type problems would correlate to dogs or cats.

We had a Siamese that died of liver failure. She stopped eating and was very picky about her food for years before this. Her enzymes were chronically elevated.

A sudden spike may or may not be anything to worry about. I'd talk to the main vet and get their opinion. A lot of their decision will be how high the liver enzymes were.

Oh Roxy I hopes you feels better really soon.

My mum says that your liver is a gigantic filter in your body, and like Frances Louise mom says there are lots of reasons your liver levels can be wrong. When it doesn't work properly all the toxins that your body should filter out (and go out in your poops), build up and show up in your blood test. Because thems are in your blood they make you feel pretty yucky and can cause vomiting and runny pooops. They can make you turn a bit yellow too.

An Ultrasound will check the size of Roxys liver and make sure that ther is nothing nasty causing the funny results. It is easy on beans and must be fun with a wiggly puppy.

Good luck and I hopes you feels real better soon.

I hope you are feeling better and get an all clear tomorrow when you go to the vet. I don't know what it means either to have elevated liver enzymes.

well momma works at a vetty place... i know she takes me there sometimes... i dont likes its... but... if your doctor thinks there might be soemthing really wrong with your livers, it doesn't hurt to get a second opinions... I thinks, that your momma should take you too the regular vets... but, if your poops are goods, and you'res nots barfings, thats good... but still... it wouldn't hurt for an ultrasounds maybes... and, it would be better to knows it wasn't something really really bads rights?

Roxy.... We hope this isn't anything serious and that you are feeling OK. We are like your Mom, we don't know what those levels and test mean.

Oh Roxy!! This is distressing news :( Maybe because you were so sick it has affected your levels.
Now that you are feeling better,a blood test will show better results! ( I hope so)
Deep down, you might want to know.I'd talk to your regular vet.
