It's called de Quervain's Tenosynovitis; a problem with the tendon at the base of the thumb. It's been bothering mom for about a week. Last Monday and Tuesday it was really bad, the chiropractor put mom's wrist in place on Wednesday, then Friday and Saturday it was acting up. Yesterday it woke mom up at 5:30 am.

You can still pet me mom, I don't care what the doctor said!
